Busy, Sick & Waiting for the Little Man

A whole week without blogging - I know! But, I have an excuse. I've been sick... for almost a week now. It's horrible, especially since I can't take anything for it really. Anyways, there's no better time than now to share with you some recent purchases... YES, I think I'm somewhat nesting. A couple of weekends ago I splurged on some items for the home. Take a look:

These lamps... to die for! Normally $120 each, we scored them for only $52 at Home Sense!

This owl... the hubs really wanted him so we got him. And, then there were these cute deer. They're already on the mantel just waiting for the rest of the Christmas ornaments to join them. I believe they were under $10 a piece. (Both were from Home Sense)

Oh and did I mention the hubs has always wanted candle holders like these. And, our dining room table could definitely use them - so we scored them for $14 to $17 a piece, if my memory serves me correctly. Also from Home Sense.

Then we stopped at Ikea and picked up a thing or two for organizing and two of these picture frames. They were $12 on sale from $25. Just waiting to choose some photos to go in them and they will be hanging over the couch in the formal living room by Christmas.

Oh.. one last thing! A while back... like a month or two. I meant to do a blog post on some new bedding. Yes we scored at Ikea with this great duvet cover - I believe it was only $25.

Alright... that's it for now. I created a list and I mean HUGE LIST of posts I have to get together for you. I'm working on them right now... and of course, the first is the mantel reveal in the formal living room. That room is slowly coming together and I'm slightly in love. Oh... and did I mention it's also because the hubby has been building me new end tables... reveal soon - promise.

And yes, the nursery is pretty much done. A couple more basics and I promise I will share. Now, I better go pack this thing they call a hospital bag... the little man is safe to come anytime now. Oh what the heck, here's his latest mug shot (weighing approx. 7lbs 3oz):

Isn't he cute? :)

Before and After | Nursery Wardrobe Makeover

Get ready for it... I'm pretty excited about this Ikea wardrobe. From the purchase, to stopping by and picking up some paint from The Sugar Post in Merrickville, ON, to putting it all together in place... Here's the before and after on one of my favorite projects to date!

Where to begin? We had the perfect little nook in our Nursery for a wardrobe and I knew exactly what I wanted. I searched Kijiji for a couple of months, but each one that was under $100 was always sold before I could snatch it up! Until, one day, it was like the heavens opened up and there it was. It's short too - perfect for our little guy. And even better, it came in at $60 dollars! I had already pinned the color I wanted and just had to find me some paint.

In my parts of town, milk paint isn't easy to come by. I thought I'd have to trek into the city to get some but something told me to Google it first. The hubs and I planned on spending a relaxing day shopping in the local towns, Merrickville especially - it's full of stores that a blogger would love. Okay any woman in their right mind would love this place. I searched up milk paint and there it was, The Sugar Post carrying Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint - sold! I dragged the husband out for the day and I fell in love.

The store was too cute! I will definitely have to do a blog post on it when I have a chance to go back and take some pictures of it's adorable setup. It's like a bloggers dream store - okay maybe like the store I could only hope of having one day. I'll definitely be going back for more.

As you can see, SNEAK PEAK.... the nursery is coming together. We picked up these cute little wooden figures from the local SuperStore. The painting is by my grandma. And, the iron owl was a gift we gave to my hubs' grandma in the past and she has downsized so we got to have it back!

Of course, the decor wouldn't be complete without a football and a little OshKosh stuffed bear. I can't wait to grab some newborn photos using these as props.

Oh... I almost forgot. The hubs hates painting and let me tell you he loved using milk paint. We did two coats mixed evenly with water and a final with the paint watered down even more. I love the imperfections. We are supposed to put a final coat on it but I really don't want to. Oh ya, and the knobs were stolen from another dresser we recently did over. We changed the bottom drawer to only need one and these worked perfect. They were already distressed we just popped them on.

I can say I am in love. It's the perfect piece of furniture for the nursery - yes I will be sharing pics soon. Only a couple more details and the room will finally be done! Can't wait... the little guy is almost here. In the meantime, if you haven't already... you must go try using milk paint on something - you'll fall in love. Oh ya, and take a trip to Merrickville and stop by The Sugar Post - it's a must!

Almost Before & After | Our New Kitchen

This post is image heavy. Enjoy.

Okay, I'm giving in... here's a sneak peak, hence, the "almost" before and after because we aren't quite finished and, with reno A.D.D., I'm not sure we'll ever get there. Oh and it's kind of a happy family day present to you (or President's day)... So here goes.

After you get through the shady, dark, red-walled, before pictures... you will see the beauty. I promise not to talk to much, just let the pictures do it for you. And... just to get this question out of the way, I designed it, we (hubby and I) put together the cabinets and the hubby did the rest, because this is in fact an Ikea Kitchen! And those are definitely some granite countertops (our splurge on the project, okay the appliances were kinda a splurge too). Anyways, here goes.

Not so beauty:

Almost there:

Hold tight:

Oh there it is, beauty:

And, here's about as much decor as there gets:

And here are the lights I kinda created for way less (here's the blog post - diy pendant lights).

Oh and here's what is left to do. (Besides paint the ceiling and trim around the window.)

Add subway tile like so, only with lighter grout:

And create some awesome artwork to put on each side of the range hood, because my decor kind of sucks right now and I really really want some. So, someday I'll post some and show you how to make them and they will hang like so:

Phew! Picture overload or what? What do you think of the sneak peak? I promise sometime this year we will have backsplash and I will share the actual finished kitchen. Until then, that was it. Our Ikea Kitchen designed by moi and built by the hubster. :o)

It's time to link it up :)

DIY Pendant Lighting with Lampshades

When we were redoing, okay gutting our main floor, I had the perfect image for the lights I wanted over the island. There was just one problem - the $ price tag. The lights I wanted started at $160 each! If anyone knows me, they know I wouldn't spend that on a light no matter how much I loved it.

So, I got creative. (Please excuse all ceilings... I need to get them painted!)

In fact, back in the summer I even took a picture with my phone of the exact fixture I bought so I could share my steal with you. Lets just say we did both lights for $60. Are you ready for it? Here goes.

So, here are the style I wanted:

Ballard Designs - $299

Placed like this:

In white with a silver post. (Can't find that picture?)

And here is what I have:

How did we do it? First, we bought two glass pendant light fixtures from Home Depot for $20 each, where the glass was removable.

Then we bought the JONSBO lamp shades from Ikea for $10 each.

JONSBO lampshade from Ikea

First I removed the glass from the light fixture, then before the hubby installed it, slid the Ikea lamp shade down the post so that it would rest on the fixture. And, voila. Install and complete. Why pay over $300 when you can have these beauties for only $60. And... if you cut the lamp shade wire for easy on and off, you could also change out the shade to match seasonal decor!

It's "Favorites Friday" | Ikea Kitchens

An extra long weekend for me, I thought I'd get my Friday post wrapped up early! This weekend brings all final touches to the house, a massive cleaning and moving of unneeded options to the in-laws basement! You guessed it, the listing agent comes Wednesday to take pictures and put the sign in the front lawn. It's hard to believe it's already here. So, while I missed my pin attempt this week, I certainly can't miss Favorites Friday. Last weekend we stopped by the new Ikea in Ottawa and I fell in love with a few pieces they have, as well as a few kitchens... so, today's subject is five favorite Ikea kitchens. Enjoy!

Okay, so if you haven't guess it I'm pretty much a sucker for white kitchens... although gray is slowly growing on me! The second picture is my absolute favorite, while it came up as an Ikea Kitchen, I'm not 100% it is after analyzing it... SO, I apologize if it isn't... but it's just so beautiful! And of course the last one with the mix of grays and white is beautiful! Have a great weekend out there... if I find time I'll try and make up for my missed pin attempt post and do it on the weekend... if not, see ya Monday...
